Rugby in MCS

Mountrath CS only started playing rugby in Feb 2018 - Ever since, rugby has developed significantly within the school and gone from strength to strength.

Starting with only a 1st/2nd year team in 2018, the school has now developed 3 teams - a 1st year team, a Junior team and a Senior team, who all compete annually in Leinster schools rugby competitions.

Although rugby is a relatively new sport within the school, MCS has already achieved great success within Leinster competitions. In 2018/2019, our Junior team in their first year playing competition rugby, went on to win the Leinster Junior Development Shield title. The final of which was played at Energia Park, Donnybrook Stadium.

Rugby training in the school currently occurs twice a week after school. Our aim is to continue developing the game within the school - getting as many of our pupils playing and enjoying the game and hopefully this resulting in further successes in competition in the future.

Special mention to Paul Brady - Leinster CCRO, for his help and support in developing rugby at MCS. Also a huge thank you to Mark Sheeran - Managing Director of CJ Sheeran, for sponsoring the schools rugby jerseys and another thank you to Portlaoise RFC for allowing MCS to use the club’s facilities for matches.
